EVENT OVERVIEW

Why Cloud Computing?
Our survey results suggest we’re entering a period of accelerating IT cloud services adoption, with the portion of organizations exhibiting significant adoption moving from 15-25% today to 25-45% in three years. It’s not a big leap to consider - given the chart above and the chart below - that IT cloud services are either at, or getting very close to,the “crossing the chasm” stage.

Cloud Computing

If this is so, the implication for IT suppliers is very clear: the next three years, as IT cloud services expand from Early Adopters to the Early Majority, is the critical time to develop strong cloud offerings, and play a leadership role in bringing customers, your own organization and your partner ecosystem “across the chasm”. As Moore famously points out, suppliers who fail to seriously contend for a leadership role will be left with decidedly minority share as their reward.

Major type of Cloud Services?

  1. Infrastructure clouds offer compute services such as CPU, networking, and storage, often presented as a virtual machine, over the Web. The user installs its own (ie, based on a purchased license) operating system and applications on top this type of cloud. Infrastructure clouds also include wide-area network and communications services offered as IP-based virtual private networks, provided that they offer end-users the ability to manage their own virtual network resources via web interfaces.
  2. Platform clouds offer a defined hardware/software stack (operating system, application dev/mgmt tools, database) hosted in a cloud form factor, providing an application development and production environment, and ongoing hosting and provisioning infrastructure.
  3. Application clouds virtualise an entire application stack, and is what today is often described as SaaS.

These services may be consumed either in their entirety as a solution, or may deliver individual services accessed through APIs, allowing those services to be aggregated into another application solution that may be hosted locally in a company's intranet, on a second cloud, or on the same cloud that is providing the application services.
